Pre-Marriage Counseling

The decision to marry is one of the most important decisions we make in life, so we want to make sure we have done everything possible to create a great marriage from the very beginning. The Renewing Life Center offers a premarital counseling package to help you get your marriage off to a healthy start.

Great marriages don’t happen by accident, they take work and effort and a key component is preparation. The average couple will invest $20,000 to $25,000 on their wedding day, so it makes sense to invest time and energy into creating a strong and fulfilling marriage. Studies have shown that couples who complete a marriage preparation program are 30% less likely to divorce, report significantly higher levels of commitment and fulfillment, and have an easier time adjusting to marriage than those who don’t. Premarital counseling can make a big difference!

What can I expect?

  • Four 60-minute sessions with Mark Whelchel, a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and pastor. (With 10 years as a licensed MFT and over 25 years as a pastor, Mark has decades of experience in helping couples prepare for a great marriage.)

  • OR Four 60-minute sessions with one of our other experienced staff counselors, Kevin Scott or Jennifer Antonucci.

  • Private one-on-one meetings. This is not a group or class; there are no group activities, so it is completely confidential and tailored to your needs and growth areas.

  • You will take the Prepare Inventory developed by Dr. David Olsen; the most widely used scientifically validated premarital assessment available. 

  • You will review the 17-page report on your relationship (from the Prepare Inventory) and be able to see the areas of your relationship that are strengths and the areas where growth is needed in ten vital areas.

  • You will take a personality inventory that will help you to understand each of your individual strengths and weaknesses and how they are likely impact your future marriage.

  • The topics and discussions will be tailored to your individual needs. Some of the topics normally covered are: communication, conflict resolution, personalities, faith, finances, family of origin, sexual relationship, roles, responsibilities, and expectations.

  • The premarital counseling package is available for $335. This includes: four hours of private counseling sessions (four 60 minute sessions), two assessments, a 17-page relationship report, book, and materials.
